Silvaner

The green Silvaner was once the most important grape variety of the Palatinate. Today, the area of Silvaner vineyards is decreasing slightly, as the cultivation of new breeds has been done mainly at the expense of the Silvaner (almost 6 % of the winegrowing area). However, some wineries favor a renaissance of the grape variety, as there has been an increasing trend of growing the traditional grapes again.

Regarding taste, Silvaner wines are mostly neutral. However, fruity Silvaners can also be grown in stony and gravelly soils. The wine is best served with light dishes. Its origins are not completely known apart from the fact that it is a very old grape variety, which probably originates form the Danube area. It is assumed that it is native to Transylvania in Romania.
