Riesling
Riesling definitely is THE grape variety of the German Wine Route and particularly of the Mittelhaardt region. Riesling wines are fine, elegant, and have a fruity and peachy bouquet. In great vintages, the late maturing grape variety can produce internationally renowned high-quality wines. Riesling wines support the German wine economy to a great extent and produce great basis wines for the making of sparkling wines. So it is hardly surprising that you can find Riesling vines in all of the German winegrowing areas and that they are among the most commonly planted new vines.
The origin of the grape variety has not yet been determined. It is most likely to derive from the wild Vitis Vinifera Varsylvestris, which is native to the Palatinate. The origin of the name is also unknown. Does the name derive from Rusling (Rus=dark wood) or from Rissling (tear or crack) or from its proclivity for poor fruit sets (Verrieselung)?
The wine has a magnificent, fruity lemon aroma, spirit and a distinct degree of acidity. It is often referred to as the “King of White Wines”. The wine truly deserves this name, as is shown by its share of wine cultivation areas (21%).
