Kerner
Due to its frost resistance, appealing Riesing-like wines and relatively reliable grape juice returns, this grape variety has become the most extensively grown new breed in a very short time. Kerner is a breed of Trollinger x Riesling of the Staatliche Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt für Wein- und Obstbau in Weinsberg. The grape variety’s name alludes to Justus Kerner, a poet from Württemberg.
The largest cultivation areas of this new breed can be found in the Palatinate. The wines of the Kerner are fresh, fiery, Riesling-like, and feature a fruity, fine bouquet that sometimes yields a slight note of nutmeg.
