Dornfelder
The German success story of this grape variety started in a vineyard area of 124 hectares in 1972. Today, with 9% of the overall acreage, the Dornfelder is one of the most commonly grown red wines, and this percentage is still increasing.
In the course of time, the Dornfelder has lost its image of being a teinturier wine and has developed into an independent, fruity and rich wine and sparkling wine specialty. On top of that, some winegrowers produce barrique Dornfelders of very high quality. The cross-breed of Helfensteiner x Heroldrebe is grown mainly in the Palatinate. It is usually vinified dry, as a soft, rich and full-charactered red wine, which is best suited to roasts and aromatic cheese.
