Worth Seeing: The Heidenlöcher

This complex, which is very interesting from a cultural and historical point of view, is a preserved refuge castle.

Heidenlöcher near Deidesheim

About 2.5 km to the west of Deidesheim, on one of the first slopes of the Mittelhaardt, you can visit the remnants of an early-medieval refuge castle of a kind referred to as “Heidenlöcher”. The castle, which was built in the 9th or 10th century to protect the region from Hungarian and Viking raids, perfectly illustrates the design of refuge castles. Excavations have unearthed the foundations of two gates and 65 stone houses, which were enclosed by a circular rampart with a 450 m drystone wall.

Follow the Wallberg/Turnerehrenmal signs along the “Kaisergarten” street until you reach the Sensental parking lot. It is a 20 minute walk from there.
